Aspen Log Furniture - About Us

Aspen Log Furniture is situated in the foothills of the Rockies, very near Waterton Lakes and Glacier International Peace Park in Alberta, Canada. It began about 15 years ago when founder, Dave Campbell, who had worked with wood most of his life, saw a log swing in a magazine and began experimenting with building one of his own.

He started building swings with straight logs, which he gave away to family and friends. Soon they were in great demand and he began charging a minimal price. Not content with building the same thing over and over he started using crooked Aspen logs, making each swing a unique masterpiece of it's own. Once that had been perfected he attempted a queen size bed, then a king size and soon his hobby became a thriving business which he called Aspen Patio Furniture. Chairs, tables, and benches followed.

When he began building a new home, handrails, light fixtures, lamp tables, log benches, and flower boxes were added to his repertoire as his wife, Nonavee, required them. Dave changed his company name to Aspen Log Furniture when he realized that just as much of his furniture is now found inside the home as on the patio.

Our Unique Aspen Furniture Process

The process starts with a long drive in the mountains to find, cut, and collect crooked Aspen trees. Most of the summer is spent looking for just the right logs to be used the following year. Once the pieces are selected the wood is stored and left to age for one to two years with the bark intact. The Aspen bark naturally stains the wood underneath, and when the log is finally pealed, quite an assortment of beautiful colors appear.

The wood, now ready to be sanded and formed into a piece of fine art, is incorporated into the design of the piece, the bends and twists becoming part of the furniture. Of course each piece is completely unique. No two can possibly be made alike because of the nature of the wood. Recently, Dave has experimented in different woods: burled cottonwood, skip peeled burled pine, or green peeled crooked pine which leaves a beautiful white wood; however, the crooked Aspen log is still his favorite.
